CanToo is an organisation that facilitates events for participants to achieve personal and life goals such as ocean swimming and in return the participant raises the funds for cancer research. The funds go directly to the researchers. Most researchers never receive government funding with 80% being knocked back. This year we had Dr Zaklina Kovacevic out to the pool to speak to us. Zaklina and her team are able to focus on cancer metastasises solely due to the funding from Cantoo. Her team have identified a molecule with causes normal cells surrounding a tumour to contribute to chemotherapy resistance. They are now trialling a solution to combat this, which would make our current drugs more effective and prevent cancer spreading.
“I feel very proud to help with fundraising on such an important cause. This year, I’ve stepped up my personal goal, and have registered to do THE BIG SWIM 2020 which is an iconic and mammoth ocean swim from Palm Beach to Whale Beach. To put this in perspective, two years ago I could barely go past 25 meters of an indoor pool, and cried into my goggles when I went 8 metres out from the beach into the ocean off Shelly beach. Now I regularly swim the B & B from Manly – Shelly return as a part of my training for this huge event. The event is held on Australia Day 2020 – Sunday 26th!!!”
